What key cultural considerations should I be aware of when working with my Filipino team?

There is such an incredible opportunity to unlock Filipino talent into your business. Filipino culture is centred around loyalty, honesty and respect. • Create a Family: Treat the staff like family and you will be rewarded with honesty and loyalty.
  • Create a strong sense of community: Filipinos have a collective and family-oriented mindset. Building a sense of camaraderie and teamwork is crucial. Team-building activities and fostering a supportive work environment are effective strategies.
  • Transparency and Honesty: Be transparent. Don’t hide what is real. Filipinos would much prefer to hear how it is. If you are not honest, you will lose their trust.
  • Politeness and Courtesy: Filipinos place a high value on politeness and courtesy. Maintaining a polite and respectful tone in communication is vital. Criticism is often delivered indirectly to avoid causing embarrassment.
  • Face-Saving: Filipinos avoid confrontation and strive to save face for themselves and others. Criticism is best delivered constructively and privately to avoid embarrassment.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Filipinos are known for their adaptability and resilience. Being open to changes and demonstrating flexibility in work arrangements can be appreciated.
  • Communication Style: Filipinos generally use indirect communication styles. Reading between the lines and paying attention to non-verbal cues is essential. Encouraging open communication and seeking feedback can help bridge any communication gaps.
  • Work-Life Balance: While Filipinos are hardworking, they also prioritize a healthy work-life balance. Understanding and respecting this balance contributes to a positive work environment.
  • Celebration of Festivals and Holidays: Celebrate means CELEBRATE! Filipinos celebrate various festivals and holidays to the next level. Being aware of these events and showing understanding during such times fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

Remember that cultural awareness is an ongoing process, and the key is to approach interactions with an open mind, sensitivity, and a genuine interest in understanding and appreciating Filipino culture.
